Budding Photographer

Rowan has always been fascinated with my camera. He recently learned that when he pushes the button on top, a light flashes and a picture appears on the screen. He now delighted runs away with the camera to take his own pictures- and he's not half bad! Here's a selection of his work, edited to remove the hundreds of fingers over the lens shots :)

Corners of the House:

I wonder if my floors always look this bad from his perspective!

Self Portraits:

And my personal favourites, A Day at the Park:

I know the day he breaks my camera I will regret letting him play with it, but I can't help but wonder if this early introduction to photography could someday lead to an artistic future. I'd love to give him a more durable camera of his own, but until then, I guess we'll share :)

New Curtains

I finally got around to making curtains for my craft room. While I enjoy having a window in my tiny room, all it gives me is a view of our neighbor's ugly vinyl siding. Not the most inspiring thing to see, but but somehow made more pleasant with the addition of lovely new curtains!

I wish I had some before pics of the room, which is really just a tiny mudroom leading to our backyard, because I've put more work into this little space than the entirety of the rest of the house. The paint came from the mistint section at Lowe's- no clue what the name is; I was just happy finding the exact shade and finish I wanted for $5.00! Furniture is from the curb- living in college town does have its perks. I believe someone could furnish an entire house with all the stuff these kids leave behind at the end of the school year!

The curtains were upcycled thrift store finds. I used a freezer paper stencil to transfer my design. This techinique is so simple (and super addictive!) so I'll be making Ro a slew of stenciled tees for fall.

I have more plans for this room still. I want to paint the folding chair red and reupholster it with stenciled fabric (using the scissor design) and, if I have luck on the freecycle network, lay down new tile on the floor.
Now let's just hope my little room gets heat this winter!

Firetrucks!

On Saturday Ro and I walked down to Riverside Park to watch the firemen empty the hoses of the firetrucks into the Huron River. There was a not-so-surprisingly large community turnout for this event; Ypsi is a poor town, but one that will take any seemingly menial chore and turn it into cause for a celebration. Plus there was free pizza and plastic firehats to tempt us into joining the fun :)

Rowan climbed aboard the firetrucks, though he liked the ones his own size the best.

Even though it was a chilly day, I bundled Ro in his footie pjs and let him run through the mist drifting down over the deck. He watched in facination as water poured into the river below.

After changing into dry clothes he ran amok through the antique firetrucks dsiplayed on the lawn.

As summer ends, I hope we can go out and enjoy the sun a little every day. Lord knows we'll miss it this winter!
